It was just announced today that The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson will be creating a brand new Star Wars trilogy of films that is based on new characters not tied in to the existing saga films.
Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.
As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.
Personally I find this news to be very exciting. While I love the Original Trilogy and am interested to see what happens with these characters in the current Trilogy of films, it will be refreshing to explore new characters and new situations that aren’t based around Luke or Anakin Skywalker.
It’s unclear as to when in the timeline of events this new trilogy will take place. If it takes place after the events of Episode IX, perhaps we’ll be able to move past the Skywalker saga completely and start things fresh. Otherwise I’m afraid they will try to connect this new Trilogy to the current saga’s timeline of events and it will just be an offshoot much like the Anthology stories.
While we have yet to see Rian Johnson’s take on Star Wars with The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm seems very excited about having him helm this new trilogy and taking Star Wars in to a bold new direction. At least I hope so.
Johnson will be writing and directing the first film of the trilogy with no release date set currently.
What do you think? Is this a good thing, moving away from the Skywalker saga and starting fresh with a whole new set of characters, or would you prefer they continue on with the Skywalker legacy? Sound off in the comments!
